>>12495Funnily enough I watched that recently, such a good video.
The point of course stands; If all were to stay and remain as it were nothing would change. Rot and decay is a fundamental part of the laws of the universe and reality.
There are many fiction characters and stories around these concepts but one that I like is that of Namira in the Elder Scrolls. One of the Daedric Princes, the gods of the various Oblivion realms. They all embody various traits and aspects. They are rather like the old Greek gods in that way; They may be sentient gods who can reshape their own worlds and realms as they wish but they themselves are representations of aspects and concepts.
And we have learned through various L O R E in the Elder Scrolls that the biggest flaw of Daedric Princes is that they can't change. They will forever be bound and stuck to whatever concept, idea and aspect that they represent. Sheogorath, the god of madness will always be mad, Mehrunes Dagon the god of destruction will always want to destroy, Boethiah the god of plots and treachery will always end up betraying everyone and so on and on
Back to the subject at hand; The Daedric Prince Namera. In older games she was known for being all about the dark, shadows, and various things that inspire disgust in mortals like slugs, maggots and spiders.
However she has had a ton of new L O R E added around her and in the Elder Scrolls online that really adds some extra meat. You see Namira is not just the god of darkness; Turns out she is an aspect the void. The void in elder scrolls being an eternal nothingness. Not just darkness or death; No, the literal nothingness. Primordial nothingness as in total absence of anything, the kind of eternal never ending nothingness that's a bit of a paradox and only existed prior to reality and the universe itself coming about.
But then you find out she also represents rot and decay. Now that's interesting. It would seem the implication being that due to her own nature of representing eternal nothingness and wanting the universe and reality to return to that state she therefore is forever bound to and will always want and desire for things to rot. For life to decay, for life to wither, die, fade, rot and decay until there is nothing left but nothingness.
She always had the aspects of slugs and maggots and such. But why? Because they represent decay and rot. Not because people find them strange or weird; but because they are a fundamental part of how rot and decay work. Maggots will infest a coprse, laying it's eggs inside of one, letting them hatch and feast and devour on the corpse until nothing is left.
Same for slugs, but for nature. They eat all the rot, and the decay and all that's dying to help speed up the process of removal. For things must wither, things must die and rot and decay. Even the very universe itself has an end date. It too will rot. Every life, every planet every star, every sun every galaxy.
Rot and decay are the most basic and fundamental aspects of reality. Entropy. All things must end, all things must use up the heat and energy they have until it is all spent and there is nothing left.
And there right there is the primal fear that's kept many of us humans coming up with things to do, rules, religions, societys. All things to distract us all from the basic fact that not only shall we die but all shall die. That everyone and everything you have known shall wither, decay, rot, die and fade away until nothing is left.
The ultimate primal fear of the dark that's haunted us humans since we first started smashing rocks together, making funny noises with our mouths and thinking about things.
Are you scared of the eternal nothing?
