Project 17048b ⛵☎️ (ID: f07000)Country code: us, country type: geoip, valid: 1  8653

I'm 'visiting' family and while I'm here, there are countless little things for me fix and projects to undertake. Today I had a fun project for a change. My step dad likes his gadgets, and unfortunately his outdoor weather monitor died. So he ordered a new one. And I was tasked with putting it up.

⛵☎️ (ID: f07000)Country code: us, country type: geoip, valid: 1  8654

File: 1730065804379.jpg (3.63 MB, 4080x3072, IMG_20241027_100854576_HDR.jpg)

The previous one was affixed to a pole. But there was no real suitable way to attach it given the way the base is shaped. The instructions also recommend placing it as high as possible, and 5 ft high is just the bare minimum. So I thought we could do better.

⛵☎️ (ID: f07000)Country code: us, country type: geoip, valid: 1  8655

File: 1730065921761.jpg (5.58 MB, 4080x3072, IMG_20241027_100926290_HDR.jpg)

Besides, there's this old antenna tower in the backyard just sitting there. Why not put it to good use?

⛵☎️ (ID: f07000)Country code: us, country type: geoip, valid: 1  8656

File: 1730066037127.jpg (4.81 MB, 4080x3072, IMG_20241027_101423071_HDR.jpg)

But how to affix this base to the old antenna tower? I climbed up and took some measurements, came up with a plan, and then headed to Ace hardware to get some supplies.

⛵☎️ (ID: f07000)Country code: us, country type: geoip, valid: 1  8657

File: 1730066188811.jpg (5.26 MB, 4080x3072, IMG_20241027_101826901_HDR.jpg)

Rather than attaching it to the side, I bought a metal plate to serve as the new base. Six nuts and bolts with washers to secure the stand to the plate, and a metal-rated drill bit of appropriate size to cut the holes.

⛵☎️ (ID: f07000)Country code: us, country type: geoip, valid: 1  8658

File: 1730066460756.jpg (4.34 MB, 4080x3072, IMG_20241027_101936633_HDR.jpg)

The plan then was to set the plate at the very top of the tower, but how to secure the plate? The top of the tower is a hollow metal tube, probably a receptacle for an antenna, but at this point it's just an open tube a little over 2 inches in diameter. It just so happens that the hardware store sells massive dowel rods of 2 inch diameter. Perfect, so I can drop the dowel rod into the tube and attach the rod to the bottom of the plate. So I bought a very large wood screw and washer, a larger metal drill bit of appropriate size, plus the massive dowel rod.

⛵☎️ (ID: f07000)Country code: us, country type: geoip, valid: 1  8659

File: 1730066596962.jpg (4.13 MB, 4080x3072, IMG_20241027_103930843_HDR.jpg)

I secured the stand to the plate with some duct tape just to keep it from moving around, and then used a nail to scratch the plate and mark the positions of the holes. Not ideal but it was what I had available.

⛵☎️ (ID: f07000)Country code: us, country type: geoip, valid: 1  8660

File: 1730066709024.jpg (3.61 MB, 4080x3072, IMG_20241027_104531256_HDR.jpg)

Time to drill some holes!

⛵☎️ (ID: f07000)Country code: us, country type: geoip, valid: 1  8661

File: 1730066850756.jpg (3.48 MB, 4080x3072, IMG_20241027_105111583_HDR.jpg)

I tested the positions first and lined it back up with the stand, only to find that the front and back holes were out of position, so I had to reposition a couple of the holes.

⛵☎️ (ID: f07000)Country code: us, country type: geoip, valid: 1  8662

File: 1730066932254.jpg (4.21 MB, 4080x3072, IMG_20241027_105900562_HDR.jpg)

I guess I should mention I have never drilled into metal before. So this was kind of a learning experience. Not bad but could have gone better.

⛵☎️ (ID: f07000)Country code: us, country type: geoip, valid: 1  8663

File: 1730067013141.jpg (3.55 MB, 4080x3072, IMG_20241027_111335284_HDR.jpg)

Testing the fit of the stand on the base plate with all nuts and bolts attached.

⛵☎️ (ID: f07000)Country code: us, country type: geoip, valid: 1  8664

File: 1730067150681.jpg (3.82 MB, 4080x3072, IMG_20241027_111721476_HDR.jpg)

Now to set the position of the wood screw for the dowel rod. X marks the spot!

⛵☎️ (ID: f07000)Country code: us, country type: geoip, valid: 1  8665

File: 1730067201085.jpg (3.9 MB, 4080x3072, IMG_20241027_111835962_HDR.jpg)

Good enough for government work.

⛵☎️ (ID: f07000)Country code: us, country type: geoip, valid: 1  8666

File: 1730067395553.jpg (4.77 MB, 4080x3072, IMG_20241027_112951867_HDR.jpg)

In testing the fit between the plate and dowel rod, I found that the hole positions were not symmetrical, and the front and back hole were closer together than the other holes were to each other. This meant that the nuts, bolts, and washers were too close to the dowel rod at the front and back and would be impossible to put on.

>>8666
You might need to get another plate, but I think you're on the right track. If possible realign the holes. Did you score/mark them before hand when drilling? I see holes that go to motor here
>>8659
Use a screw driver or a sharpie and mark it. Use powdered chalk if you have to, but that would prevent it from not being symertrical

Unless I am misunderstanding what you're trying to do.

So I shaved down the dowel rod to fit over the hardware.

>>8667 Yeah I tried scoring them with the nail. But it must have shifted or something.
Sharpie wouldn't fit through the tiny holes on the stand. Chalk might have worked. But it's done at this point. I just need some time to upload the rest of it. Got more stuff to do right now.

I had measured that the tube at the top of the tower was just slightly wider than 2 in, so I wrapped the dowel rod in duct tape to cushion it.

⛵☎️ (ID: f07000)Country code: us, country type: geoip, valid: 1  8673

Finally, the weather monitor was attached to the assembly, secured with a couple of screws.

This was the plate attached to the rod with a wood screw. had to screw it down with a wrench.

⛵☎️ (ID: f07000)Country code: us, country type: geoip, valid: 1  8675

File: 1730073142862.jpg (5.17 MB, 4080x3072, IMG_20241027_123934767_HDR.jpg)

All done except for calibration and then taking it up the tower.

I pulled it up behind me, with a strap around my shoulder and a slipknot on the assembly, so I could quickly untie it and slip it into position once I made it up.

File: 1730074216708.jpg (1.99 MB, 3072x4080, IMG_20241027_152338718~2.jpg)

I untied the strap, lifted it into position, and dropped the rod down the tube

And there it is, all finished. I won't have to mess with it again until the batteries need replacing.

I don't know. Hopefully I'll be out of here on Wednesday or Thursday, but then I'll have to come back again for more work they need done.
I hope your long weekend is going well!

I'm cutting holes in drywall today. just finished cutting the holes and cleaning up the sawdust. Now to figure out how to wire GFCI outlets.

Good morning. Sorry, I was just watching youtube after work; didn't see your reply.

The recommendations are that we have to likely re-work two contracts (cause they might have temporary employment issues), and we have to check the background of companies more regularly.

Are all the outlets ready?

>>8714 'morning. It's cool, I figured you went to sleep.
That sounds like it isn't too much fun to deal with.
No, my mom didn't like how I wanted to do it, so she wants me to watch a bunch of videos and read a bunch of sites about how other people do things differently, and I'm sure they will come to the exact same conclusion I did. I did get the medicine cabinet up though. She wasn't completely satisfied with it either. Can't wait to get out of here.

Tomorrow we once again have to take my stepdad down to physical therapy, a full day ordeal. Thursday I think we're going to Arkansas to pick up a printer. And hopefully Friday I can get out of here.
