Neither one of those scenarios sounds very good! Hopefully it's something much less serious.
That's a really tough situation; I haven't had to personally deal with anything quite that serious on my own yet.
My step-dad had a really bad stroke about 4 years ago. After spending several months in hospital and at a nursing home during Covid, both he and my mom together decided that he would live at home and make an effort at some sort of recovery rather than at a care facility where he'd likely just circle the drain and die. But four years later he's basically 90% invalid. He can hardly speak. He can only use one hand. He can't move on his own. He can't prepare meals on his own and until recently had to take all of his meals through a tube. All he can really do is stand up, pee, sit back down, and watch shows/movies/sports on his tablet. Most of the time, my mom doesn't have anyone to help take care of him. Between his twice weekly PT sessions an hour and a half away, my mom's part-time work, her church, and her pets, she's run ragged and their place is falling to shit. So every once in a while, I come "visit" for a week, or two, or four, and help her get caught up on things while fixing things that have gone wrong in and around their house, cleaning, setting things up for them, etc.. I've been here for about 3 weeks in the past 2 months, and I'll be here for probably one more. It gets very aggravating at times.
